Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to report a firearm I inherited in Massachusetts?
You have 7 days from discovery to report the firearm to the Commonwealth through the Massachusetts gun transaction portal. Failure to register is a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Contact your local police or an attorney to ensure you complete this correctly.
Do I need a License to Carry if I inherit a gun in Massachusetts?
Yes. Massachusetts law currently gives you 180 days to obtain a License to Carry after inheriting a firearm. The process includes a safety course, application, references, and an interview with your local police department. Start immediately, as six months goes by faster than you think.
Can I just have the police take the gun if I find one in my parent's house?
If you call the non-emergency line, an officer can come secure the firearm and help with immediate safety. However, you still need to report the inheritance and either obtain a license, sell it through a licensed dealer, or transfer it to someone with an LTC within the legal timeframes.
